So, here's a courtyard in #Budapest, #Hungary, that I stumbled into on an icy March day filled with alternating rain and snow
I was bundled up in a rain jacket, thick gloves, and a furry ushanka, a nasty flu bug working its way through my guts, yet to pounce.
Black, empty windows stared down at me from the four story walk up. Few signs of life: A thin house plant. Fragile tables with scattered items on them. I wanted to live here.

It seems no one is willing to trade goods and services for a hearty brisket anymore.
Slowcial media: participants mail comments to a central address, they are scanned and assembled into a broadsheet style newspaper, with bylines (usernames). Then we get to respond to the broadsheet topics and it gets sent out again the next month. We could make fake ads and make it a zine art project... what do you think?

One of the reasons Trader Joe's is successful is that they limit choices.
Do you really need to have two dozen varieties of peanut butter? Probably not. So they just stock a few. Gets people in-and-out very quickly, makes the stores smaller, and it's a very enjoyable experience for many despite being objectively quite limited.
Choice-overload is a real thing, and I think those steering this ship need to sit with that for a while.

I'm not much into Anime, but I love the opening scene of Robot Carnival (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54VEzgkMMsQ). Sometimes I feel like a twisted mechanical carnival trying my best to approximate what other people think is fun and entertaining. Instead I just end up blowing everything up, destroying innocent bystanders and then just rolling on into the sunset thinking I've done a good job.

The last wooden bridge on Route 1 along the California coast, this is the Albion River Bridge. Built in 1944, when steel and concrete were scarce, it is constructed mostly of salvaged wood. One thousand feet long, it towers over the mouth of the river and Albion Flat Beach. Local residents have resisted efforts to replace the bridge, and a group called the Albion Bridge Stewards do a lot to keep the bridge in safe operating order.

So how does Mastodon pay its engineers?
Mostly...it doesn't. Eugen and Claire are the only paid devs on Mastodon.
Everyone else is making updates for free, as a hobby, on the side, after their day job.
People are building CalcKey for free. People are building just about every fediverse product for free, as part of the open source community.
It was particularly amusing when Elon said he wanted to open source the algorithm--
Jack Dorsey saying he wanted to create an open source protocol--
Nearly all of the Fediverse is open source. The algorithms are already open source. The protocol is a W3C standard (ActivityPub) just like HTML.
The future these dopes have been trying to build already exists.
There's just no money or power in it for them, so they have no interest and pretend it doesn't exist.
