@trendless @thezeroes I have an instance... I believe it is 3.5, because for some reason the linode install of Debian couldn't install 4.x. imnow thinking of changing to a non US host and doing that transition might be a good time to upgrade to 4.x. how do I make sure my users' accounts and data can be maintained?
@heavenslittlebastard @nellie_m @XenoDangerEvil @actuallyautistic Welcome! It can be a bit overwhelming but it starts making sense quite soon. When you're used to being fed posts by an algorithm, it can be a bit jarring when everything you see is by choice.
To help make connections: name 5-7 (-20) things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same.

Great video for newcomers (and veterans) to mastodon
@nellie_m @cybervegan @actuallyautistic this is great info! I run my own very small server, ill look into what tweaks I can use to make this issue better for me and my users!
@cybervegan @XenoDangerEvil @actuallyautistic
here’s an explanation why (first link) and a workaround if you want to see all replies (second link). It’s good to remember that if you visit the original page in your browser, you can only read, not like/boost/comment.
@cybervegan @actuallyautistic thanks!
@actuallyautistic Could anyone recommend a book on emotions for Autistic people - preferably BY an Autist. My Autistic 14YO son just asked me for one, but "not one for kids". He says he needs something that discusses emotions and what they feel like, to help him understand how he feels. He knows anxiety all too well, but the more subtle ones are difficult for him to understand.
We're looking ourselves, of course, but so far the recommends we have found have been rather suspect. I value the ActuallyAutistic hive mind's opinions far more than any search engine's!
Please boost for reach ;-)
@cybervegan @actuallyautistic hmmm. I don't see any of the replies..... someone mentioned that this happens on mastodon. Might be a huge flaw. Id like to see some answers to this for myself if you could repost some
@VeroniqueB99 I remember when Dan Quayle misspelled "potato" and we were all like "yeah... he can't be president."
Good times.
I loved this interview between Heather Cox Richardson and Stacey Abrams about how to meet the moment of the next four years.
@raindrops_and_roses i have watched this so many times. Id make the audio my ring tone but im an American while guy. Seems like I shouldn't. Butters is so inspiring, I love it
Meanwhile in serious countries, the opposition stands up and opposes in beautiful ways.
MP Hana-Rawhiti Kareariki Maipi-Clarke of New Zealand, tore up proposed changes to the Indigenous Treaties Bill and started a haka in the Parliamentary Gallery.
She's the youngest MP at 22, representing Te Pāti Māori.
BADASS.

@mdione what is the experiment, exactly?
This is an experiment. Please boost.
Here's the idea: This post is going first to my followers, then, if they boost it, to other people. This domain has been registered for only this experiment. I should see in my web server's logs when mastodon instances start crawling the site for info. Then maybe also some curious humans.
I just want to play with my monitoring a bit :)
@seachanger i have started many projects, they are helping me reach my community and find others and build connections. I can't look at news sites, reddit is tough. Boingboing has ad blocker blocking now. I have very little to read, so the projects are helpful.
I worked for the burningman project as Department of Public Works for 16 or so years. I have been programming since I was 12 and this is my 1st forray into social media. Here's hoping federation lives up to its promises!
