Black joy isn't just us having fun. It's a literal weapon of survival. Seriously!
It sucks that Black people are so good at surviving fascist Americans that wish us harm. But we are. We're kind of the world's leading experts on this.🤷🏿♂️
I see lots of folks talking about how to prepare for what's coming. I'm not saying those preparations are bad, but a lot of it is US-style rugged individualism.
My advice: Find your community. Strengthen those bonds. And find your sources of joy!
Part of my joy comes from blocking angry dudes that feel entitled to engagement. Highly recommend it! 👍🏿
I don't have to talk with everybody. There are so many people that are genuinely curious and open minded, that I just don't have to deal with these dudes.
There's an effectively infinite supply of "dudes on the internet." There is absolutely no shortage. The marginal cost of blocking one, is close to zero.
"Well, what about the marketplace of ideas huh? Not very inclusive of you!"
OK! 🤣
Paradox of tolerance and all that.
I don't see it as a paradox at all. You cannot include all ideas, because one of the loudest ideas, is "We should silence the ideas of Black people!" 🙂🙃
You cannot include this idea without excluding other ideas. So absolute inclusion shouldn't even be anyone's goal. It's certainly not mine.
And dealing with annoying people online can be exhausting. Even if they're not malicious! Me doing "racism 101" individually for millions of people, just doesn't work.
I'm going to start listing some good things that have happened in society, and I know a lot of you are going to want to say, Well, that's all over now, it will all be taken away, but remember nothing lasts forever, even the bad stuff. So, instead of giving into despair and hopelessness, think for a second, and instead of tearing down hope, add to the list.
The idea that we would have open legal gay marriage in my lifetime wasn't something I believed would happen, but here we are.
I can buy legal recreational Marijuana in my state.
The show Drag Race not only exists, but it has for a long time, and it's very popular.
AIDS is no longer a death sentence.
And to add to that, you can take a drug that will just stop you from getting it.
There is a vaccine for Malaria.
I can just go buy an electric car.
When I was a kid, parents hitting kids was the rule, not an exception.
In my teens and 20's, I never met a transitioned or transitioning Trans person, now I know lots of them.
Abortion pills exist.
There are tenant union.
There is a vaccine against cervical cancer.
Women make up more than half of the college educated work force.
Millions of people showed up to protest police brutality in 2020, I know that's not enough, but if you compare that to the past, or even Rodney King, it's a big fucking deal.
Things are rough, and we are scared, but we haven't just been treading water, and we won't just sit in misery. It's never going to be perfect, but we can be better.
Spotify just reported record-breaking profits.
In totally unrelated news, Spotify stopped paying nearly 90% of artists on the service ANYTHING (no royalties for songs w <1k streams/year)
Friendly reminder that if you're designing any kind of personal information form and you decide to:
1. Validate names for "bad words"
2. Put a minimum characters limit on names
3. Have two separate fields for "first" and "last" name
Then you're doing it wrong with a shitload of very western-minded assumptions that are not universal and will cause issues
