And I'll say again that the real genius of mastodon/fedverse/activitypub is that it costs money. The implications of that are huge and I don't think get talked about enough. Like, it might not be a lot, and not personally cost you money, but it is costing your server admin money. And that changes things pretty fundamentally.
Like, unfettered growth is no longer desirable, because it's not making you money. Once you remove adtech from the conversation things change, and in fact are inverted in some ways. There is no longer the question of yeah these people are assholes but they are making me a bunch of money. They are now costing you money, and you are in the position of having to decide if you want to support asshole behavior with your own actual money
FYI, when a website erases your text that you just spent an hour writing, you can use this little trick to recover it 99% of the time:
1. find the firefox pid
$ pgrep -l firefox
2. attach gdb to firefox and dump its core
$ sudo gdb <pid>
gcore firefox.dump
<this takes awhile>
quit
<firefox dies>
3. find your lost text in the coredump
$ strings firefox.dump | grep "a unique word/sentence from ur text"
i just did this today to recover a long post i wrote, and figured i'd show others!!

Thanks to The Cinematography Podcast for having me back on, this time to chat The YouTube Effect and go deep on the Hollywood strike and state of the industry. Where else, but on YouTube.
Just saw someone on tiktok say "we made it to the 'ber months" and I've got a whole new concept of the back third of the year
@Silversalty @cwbussard @pluralistic Just this morning my Uber driver was explaining that nowadays when there is surge pricing, the surge goes to Uber and not the driver.
It's shitty for two reasons: Driver said he gets fewer tips during Surge because passengers think he's already getting extra compensation.
It's shitty for passengers because the concept behind surge pricing was *supposed* to attract more drivers due to higher pay rates.
Enshittification at its most blatant.
I worked for the burningman project as Department of Public Works for 16 or so years. I have been programming since I was 12 and this is my 1st forray into social media. Here's hoping federation lives up to its promises!
