Let's be careful with how we represent this. Threads says they are starting to test federation. What they actually seem to be doing so far is making it possible to view Threads posts from within Fediverse apps. At least inititially there is no Fediverse back channel into Threads for either comments or posts. This is not real federation. It is more like a Threads reader.

Giving them credit for "federation" is their marketing goal, but so far the reality falls short.

If and when #Meta federates and comes to the #SFBA instance, the audience dynamics will change big time. More people here will have more people to follow.

Some good in that. A larger audience will bring in more voices, connect us to people who won't ever join "Mastodon".

Topics that get no traction will also improve (see NBA).

But a larger Fediverse audience also means our reach will be diluted. Lots of people on Mastodon want to follow and engage with the usual popular accounts. So once again we'll see a homogenization of topics and narratives (aka "what to talk about").

If this happens, then this place becomes just like all the rest. A handful of people driving most of the engagement.
