Me: I worked in a film photo lab in high school. It wasn't a golden age. It wasn't a great medium to use. It was expensive, bad for the environment and your health. The quality of the photos were limited by your budget. And no, film doesn't have "infinite resolution" because it's analog—the quality of the photo emulsion limits the clarity of the photo, so there's no reason to—

For anyone keeping a secret mobile phone hidden from an abusive partner: UK Gov are testing an alert system tomorrow (Sunday 23 April) at 3:00 PM. Make sure it’s off or on airplane mode or opt out to keep it hidden. Expand post for instructions.
If anyone has a secret mobile phone hidden from an abusive partner, remember to switch off or put in airplane mode etc as described below, or the phone will be activated with the loud alert during the afternoon tomorrow (Sunday 23 April) at 3:00 PM.
Please share this to help keep others safe
The alert will say:
“This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a new UK government service that will warn you if there’s a life-threatening emergency nearby.
In an actual emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.
Visit gov.uk/alerts for more information.
This is a test. You do not need to take any action.”
Mobile phone masts in the surrounding area will broadcast an alert. Every compatible mobile phone or tablet in range of a mast will receive the alert.
Your mobile phone or tablet does not have to be connected to mobile data or wifi to get alerts.
You can opt out of emergency alerts, but the government advises you should keep them switched on for your own safety.
To opt out:
Search your settings for ‘emergency alerts’.
Turn off ‘severe alerts’ and ‘extreme alerts’.
If you still get alerts, contact your device manufacturer for help.

Super depressing read on the r/freelanceWriters subreddit:
"I literally lost my biggest and best client to ChatGPT today. This client is my main source of income, he’s a marketer who outsources the majority of his copy and content writing to me. Today he emailed saying that although he knows AI’s work isn’t nearly as good as mine, he can’t ignore the profit margin. [...] Please do not think you are immune to this unless you are the top 1% of writers."

I really miss the night sky in #Chile , in particular the Magellanic Clouds – two dwarf galaxies orbiting our home galaxy, the Milky Way.
In the Mapudungun language in south-central Chile they are known as lafken, labken or künchalabken (“the lagoons”), as well as rünanko (“the water wells”).
Here I photographed them above ESO's Paranal Observatory in northern Chile.

re: fedi vs meta
I know this system doesn't force-feed suggestions to drive eyeball engagement, but that just means you might need to learn to play around a bit in exchange for not being fattened for foie gras
I hate the fact that I never found out if Pussy Cat ever told Tom Jones what was new.
Excellent snappy answer to the long and fruitful life of a lifelong hero of mine, #AlJaffee of #MadMagazine. https://www.vulture.com/article/al-jaffee-remembrance.html

I worked for the burningman project as Department of Public Works for 16 or so years. I have been programming since I was 12 and this is my 1st forray into social media. Here's hoping federation lives up to its promises!
