My 11 year old daughter asked my last weekend why I use DuckDuckGo if it's "not as good as Google".
This is the reason: https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/28/microincentives-and-enshittification/
So @pluralistic how do I explain "enshittification" to an 11 year old?
If you are in the UK, did you know about the phone number 159?
Coordinated by Stop Scams UK, it is simple, but effective:
If someone calls you, claiming to be from a bank, and you are even slighly suspicious, hang up, and call 159. Select your bank. And it connects you to their fraud team.
I don't think it covers every single bank, but a lot of them.
"Unfortunately, the dropping of the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki really is the reason why governments came around the table and were willing to discuss, despite the Cold War. I hope we don’t need to have that level of catastrophe before we act. But it may come to that". #AI

I dig a lot into old computer architectures, and one interesting barrier is the period from around 1958-1962, when everyone moved from ones-complement to twos-complement for signed integer arithmetic.
For example, the TX-2 only had ones-complement arithmetic, using the `ADD` instruction. The PDP-1 added to this a `TAD` instruction, so you could perform twos-complement addition if you wanted it. The PDP-4 dropped the ones-complement opcodes, leaving the standard addition mnemonic as `TAD` for all PDP-1-derived systems such as the 7, 9, 15, and even the PDP-8 offshoot family (5/8/12, although the 12's LINC mode does ones-complement).
Every time I see a ones-complement system like the LINC, I think of this item from 1972's infamous HAKMEM. It ends with the rather bombastic yet conclusive summary:
"Therefore, algebra is run on a machine (the universe) which is twos-complement."
I guess that about wraps it up for ones-complement!
As unveiled on last night's "Off the Hook Overtime," listener Santiago has compiled AI transcripts of the entire archive of "Off the Hook" into a searchable database. It's proving to be a very interesting way to poke around in our past!
Go to https://OffTheHook.cc and try it out.
Never a bad time to remember that Allen Ginsberg actually testified to the senate of america about lsd:

If I remember correctly, he was on lsd as he testified. Pretty baller move.

If you were the woman on a yellow racing bike who was attacked by a car driver this evening (Tue 17 Oct at 19:00) near #potsdammerplatz in #berlin, then I am a witness, have photos and the numberplate of the car.
Please boost - I guess on Muskrat and Zuck-controlled asocial media as well.
I haven't really been paying close attention to the state of the discourse around Marc Andreessen's screed, but i just want to say out loud that Andreessen has been selling this same moldering bag of bad ideas since Curtis Yarvin & all the Dark Enlightenment nonsense in like 2007 onwards.
“Techno-reactionary” is a much more accurate term than "techno-optimist”
