Just your friendly reminder that anything created or owned by a corporation will eventually consume everything its users love—and eventually itself—in the name of "growth".

Nothing, and no one, is safe from the cancerous embrace of late-stage capitalism.

However, there is hope...if we act.

The Fediverse is proof we don't need to accept the enshittification of our social media.

Open access and open source communities are proof we can stand on each other's shoulders to build a better solution.

These are a great start, but we need to treat capitalism like the disease it is, and actively fight it off.

So...block those ads, circumvent those paywalls, pirate that shit, pollute your data, and cut out whatever rotten tendrils of corporate greed you can from your life.

Capitalism can't survive if we stop feeding it.

We'll need to support each other when it lashes out—and it'll scream, and thrash, and try to take us down with it, but that's the desperation of a dying system.

If you're wondering where to start, aim for the data.

If we make it cost more to process our garbage data than companies can get from selling it, then we win that fight. And, given corporate reliance on data-brokering as a revenue stream, that's a *big* fight.

Howard Zinn:
"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. 1/3

And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory." 3/3 From "A Power Governments Cannot Suppress," p. 270

I finally left Musk's platform for good. Here is a very short post about why I was still there and why I won't be there anymore:

Picard coping tip: There is no strict timetable for dealing with loss. Everyone must find their way through grief in their own time.

“Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed. That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore." - AR Moxon

My Fediverse Advice:

* Follow more people. No, even more people than that. Basically, if you find a real person and their posts are good follow 'em
* If you get a good reply to a post boost it. If you make a good reply to a post boost it. Replies are not visible in the feed unless you do this. As long as the post is an OK start to a conversation or interesting boost it.
* Write thoughtful replies. And if you put effort into a reply boost it or probably only the people tagged will see it.

This is also a great way to follow newsletters without your email inbox getting jammed up. I mostly subscribe to newsletters, turn the emails off, and then read them in my feed reader.

Most newsletters provide an RSS feed, or there are some RSS readers that will let you send emails to a special email address so they show up in your feed.

Besides the obvious dangers of AI confabulating a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer or, say, a need to resect a liver tumor, the entire intention to replace human abstraction, inference, and meta-analytical capabilities w/ thinly-veiled "appearance of thought" is fucking insane.

Say no to AI in medicine.

I did.

Oh, and it doesn't reduce burnout if you believe in medical oversight: it's no different than having to supervise the worst resident ever, except your worst residents in this case ALSO engage in magical thinking, make shit up, and thus require a fine-toothed comb versus a rubber stamp.

And, your resident isnt really capable of predictable learning & revision in this case.

These "improve margins" posts get to the core: cut costs, harm people, move fast so they don't get caught.

It is purely a new scam by them. That's all.

I am going to be adding a variation on a "warrant canary" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrant_) to the syllabus for any classes that I teach. For example:

"I have _not_ been directed by the university, government, or any other organization to add, alter, or remove any portion of this course. Watch closely for if this notice is ever removed."

If/when institutions try to control what we teach, they may try to prevent sharing details of the ratfuckery that's happening
