I'm on a quest to achieve peak #Linux enlightenment, where Windows becomes a distant, hazy memory. 😂
My dad said something interesting as I was looking at apartments overseas.
"We have had it too easy in America, and we've gotten soft as a culture. The places you are looking have had real trouble and huge changes and struggles in living memory - they are more careful to guard democracy."
I have never heard the "gotten soft" thing turned around like that by a boomer. It's true, though. The places I am looking have had major political upheaval in the memory of his generation at least, and the last real struggle for justice, fairness, and democracy we've felt as a holistic nation (and not just activists or veterans like me) was WWII in a lot of ways. Most of those veterans are gone, now.
The collective memory loss is really scary as a global trend. We have to get better at teaching history.
@hacks4pancakes the timing of this is not a surprise. I don't know how many service members from ww2 are still here, but they are vanishing few and don't have media platforms. Every generation needs to learn from historical accounts or abject failure that leads to world War to understand what fascism actually is. I hope we avert it
New breach: Russian Minecraft service StreamCraft had 1.8M records breached in 2020. Data included email and IP address, username and MD5 or bcrypt password hash. 35% were already in @haveibeenpwned. Data was later distributed as part of a larger corpus: https://cybernews.com/security/billions-passwords-credentials-leaked-mother-of-all-breaches/
“Simply do not break a glass, and it will last a thousand years. Smash it, and it will not last an instant. Democracy is like that: fragile, but only if you shatter it.”
“Trust is like that, too, as newspapers know.”
It has fallen to me, the humor columnist, to endorse Harris for president

Follow the Crypto now tracks presidential spending, including spending routed outside of the crypto super PACs.
@joannebfreeman so where do we find journalists with ethics but also an editor or two that keeps them honest? I actually don't know. I'm not being sparky. I'm actually concerned. I like motherjones, wired and vice (until recently). BBC and al Jazeera (surprising to me) seem solid. The news wires (Reuters and the associated press) seem pretty straightforward but bereft of the pizzaz of fox and cnn
@Nickiquote yeah... there are a lot of people lamenting mastodon growth and seem infatuated with numbers getting bigger. I've never been at a punk show with 25 awesome people in the audience and wanted 300 more people who don't understand or even like the music. Filing the room with chaff isn't how you build community.

"The idea that Trump will good..." does no one have copy editors anymore? The amount of "professional" media I've seen in recent years publish astonishing typos and grammatical errors is astounding.
I worked for the burningman project as Department of Public Works for 16 or so years. I have been programming since I was 12 and this is my 1st forray into social media. Here's hoping federation lives up to its promises!
